Every once in a great while, a perfect child is born. One who never cries, sleeps all night, and gladly eats whatever food you choose to put in front of them.

But unfortunately for most of us with children, developing lifestyle habits, such as a healthy appreciation for nutritious fruits and vegetables, usually requires years of continual work.

New information recently released by researchers at Michigan State University’s College of Nursing helps to shed some light on the problem of establishing healthy dietary preferences in young children, and more importantly, may help both parents and medical professionals find more effective ways to approach it successfully.

In order to better understand the connection between mothers dietary habits, and those of their children, researchers questioned almost 400 low-income women from all over the state with pre-school-aged children then currently enrolled in educational head start programs.

They found that the children whose mothers ate fewer than four servings of fruits and vegetables per week were less likely to consume the recommended number of servings themselves. P

Imagine a statewide research engine of pooled resources, data and expertise that accelerates the “translation” of academic research to direct patient benefit. Thats the goal of the University of California Biomedical Research Acceleration, Integration, and Development (UC BRAID) program.

In partnership with the UC Office of the President (UCOP), and in cooperation with the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) programs at the five UC medical campuses, the UC BRAID initiative capitalizes on the power of collaboration and technology to streamline research in California.

Launched in 2010, this effort brings together expertise from UCOP and the five UC medical center campuses — UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles, UC San Diego, UCSF — to catalyze change and reduce barriers to biomedical research.

“Campuswide collaboration is critical to bolstering research, especially in today’s economic uncertainty and regulatory complexities,” said S. Claiborne “Cl

The cauliflower is one of those veggies that many have a love-hate relationship with.  In my house, were fickle when it comes to cauliflower.  Sometimes my kiddos will eat it and many times they look at it as if it will jump off the plate and attack them.  A great strategy for making cauliflower a bit more interesting is to purchase colored cauliflowers.  You can find this cruciferous veggie in white, orange and even purple and, dont forget about the broccoliflower which is a cross between broccoli and cauliflower.

Creating a mix of white potato, grape tomatoes & steamed cauliflower will give you a great colorful mix, perfect for fingers to dig right in!  When pureeing or mashing, do be sure that large bits that may pose a choking hazard dont sneak in!  Suitable for babies 8-10 months old, closer to 10 due to the tomato.
